There used to be a time when people prayed, implored, and
still rejected to be cast in a film; a slight chance of opportunity to
act in front of the camera was harder than winning a lottery.
The limelight was for the elite, and they left the rest in the streetlight. Pure
talent had to trek, march, and protest to achieve a chance; if missed, that’s it.
But those days are long gone with our digital revolution. Everyone’s an artist
in this new age.
Pandemic the growth of digital media
The pandemic was cruel, and unjust and left people hanging onto
their lives, but it was also the time when people got digitally active. TikTok and
YouTube boomed; with millions of views from the household. Aunties and uncles from
the neighborhood became famous. A local boy around the street becomes an actor.
Anyone with a camera is a journalist.
Traditional Cinema Vs New Age Cinema
Bollywood is plagued by nepotism; Kollywood by stardom. Access to OTT is access to world cinema. This changed the game for the Indian film industry to adapt and reconstruct, stepping out of their comfort zone. The audience becomes the critic, and it was an ultimatum for the industry to up their game to match with the world cinema. Stars had to choose a script, avoiding punch lines and fight scenes. This elevated the cinema industry to work on paper; giving raw talents an opportunity rather than stick with the same hero-centric old-school scripts.
YouTubers to the Rescue
These raw talents were not from film school, but more like homeschooled; with just a tripod and camera, they were shooting world-class cinema. Skits, mono acts, series, comedy, news, history, travel, education, you name it and YouTube delivers.
South Indian film industry supported by talented actors is now supporting talented YouTubers.
Black Sheep, Ermua Sani, Mic set, Jump cuts, Vikkals, Temple Monkeys, Finally, etc had been traveling with us, with skits and series that no TV channels delivered.
Recently there have been many new channels coming up with quality content and in upcoming years going to be the pillar of the Kollywood industry. One such newly started channel is Naughty Madraz.
