Elevate Your Home: Creative Staircase Design Ideas You'll Love

Staircase is an important part of a building as it acts as a transition space from one level to another level and it cannot be neglected by any user. But often we see buildings with poorly designed or maintained staircase which become dull and unattractive.

There are two methods for you to work on your staircase.
1. Working around your staircase which is
altering. This method is done after your construction phase when your building is completed.

2. Working on the staircase; riser and thread while
planning and designing. Usually happens in the construction phase.

Each method has 5 options.

Altering

Illusion of mirrors

When you have designed your stairway smaller and it narrows down the way; using a mirror on your landing could make your ambience look spacious. This drastically improves the interior with the illusion of more space around.

Wall panels

Wall panel could be a great way to connect more with your space. A simple plain wall transformed by 3d patterns and colours would improve the quality of your interior, connecting your stairway to the rest of your space.

Wall papers

Unlike wall panels, you would have a lot of creative options to choose from. The creative freedom could give you a quirky, fun, and creative vibe to your stairway.

Gallery wall

The problem with dull and alienated staircase arises from the reason of being disconnected from the rest of the house. This can be easily transformed by adding a few family photos and connecting them emotionally to the inhabitants. This drastically improves the ambience of the space, making them more connected and less alienated. Not just pictures, but art works would also do the trick.

Stair runner

This one interacts with your thread and riser unlike the ones above. A strip of fabric that runs elegantly down the centre of the stairs. This transforms your stairway, making it more grounded with your interior and gives you a sense of coziness. But it comes with few disadvantages as it becomes a tiring process to clean the fabric and is mostly not used in tropical countries.

Planning and Designing

Creating dominance

Making your stairway the centre of your design always makes your ambience grandeur. A double ceiling height added with a chandelier or pendent lighting could create dominance, making it dramatic and elegant.

Bookshelf

Yes, you read that right. A bookshelf along the side wall makes your stairway interactive with the user. Usually a bookshelf near the mid landing or the top landing can give a pause to the movement and engage with the surrounding. This option is not just functional but the chaotic holes on the walls storing books give an aesthetical meaning to a rather dull unengaged stairway.

Adding tiles

Right tiles could elevate the experience of your stairway. For e.g.: adding mosaic accent tiles in the riser or the thread could make your stairway quirky and fun while using it. This also makes your stairway look traditional matching with the colour of your interior. If you are opting to go more contemporary; geometric patterns of the tiles could be placed on the wall to elevate your experience.

Custom handrail

A normal factory handrail might go well with a dull stairway, but making it custom in wood or wrought iron can give a personal touch to the space. This can also give a traditional and natural touch to your interior.

Painted raisers

Painting just the raiser can make the stairway funky and quirkier. This can be done even after construction, but planning during construction can make the paint match with your interior and blend in. Raiser attracts your eye first, giving a rhythmic flow of order to the space.
