Architecture is a wonderful profession filled with colors, design, and creativity. But to become an architect, to become a creative being is not an effortless task. Five years of hard work and training would not end right there with a huge reward. It begins after your university. These are the ten main things you should consider before joining architecture.
1. In the end, there was nothing left but empty pockets.
There is no
treasure to loot at the end. It may be hard to read, but that’s the truth about
this industry. Getting a degree in architecture is tiring at the same time it’s
not wallet-friendly. Whatever money you spend is going to come back eventually,
but not immediately keep that in mind before joining the course.
2 Work as if your life depends on it
Architecture
gives you an accurate definition of hard work. It will be draining you mentally
and physically; making you forget; what sleep is. Want to be an architect? Be
ready to work!
3 Meet your deadlines or be in the headlines
“But madam,
we just finished our finals? Why are you asking us to build an empire and
submit it by tomorrow?” It is what it is and we have to adapt, improvise, and
work to deliver. Being a machine and creative is what it will train you to be.
So keep this in mind; be ready to work!
4 Redo
After all
that hard work; the thought of finally getting some sleep after submission gets
thrown into the same bin as our design sheets. Always smile and be ready to
work more on your design. Be ready to improve what you have submitted. Even if
you want to pluck your brains out; do it after redoing your design.
5 Forget your friends
Just remember the days; of going out with your friends and partying hard till dawn. Keep them in your memories because that’s where they are going to stay for five years; in your memories, not in your reality. You would hardly have time left to get some shuteye; going out and meeting friends will be last on your bucket list. But you will adapt to spending time with yourself, vibe to the music, and making new friends in the university.
6 Travel is not for sightseeing
Traveling
is essential for an architect. Case studies, site visits, and even sightseeing
would be insightful. Inspiration is everywhere; this statement is literal for
an architect. Whatever you see is a design, whatever you touch is a material; whatever
you eat and listen to can be a concept. So travel and learn rather than being a bookworm.
7 Writing is as important as sketching
“You should
be an artist to become an architect”. Nope... wrong!
You should learn to sketch, as it is a significant form of communication. It’s
also important to write your brains out. Helps you to document, and form a proper
timeline for your design, keeping things in order.
8 Copying is not a crime
Before architecture;
“copying is a punishable offense.” “Say no to copying on your exams.” You would’ve
heard all these from your teachers, but here things work differently. To
achieve excellence, it is crucial to master the art of copying. Design and
details are everywhere. The buildings that you see are not just buildings but details
and materials; you can alter them and apply them to your design.
9 Being up to date
Always learn
and get yourself up to date. A successful designer should be eager for knowledge
from the design industry. Constantly interacting with your peers and juniors
will let you be in the trend of design information and current software
details.
10 Avoid being sick; stay healthy
Being tired
and sick is going to be regular. Your body needs rest, so try to get power naps
as much as possible to regenerate the energy. Constantly, being in the wrong
posture would affect your back and spine. Be fit and healthy to tackle long-term
problems. Static stretches, neck mobility exercises, and spinal stretches can
be helpful in tackling your back pain.
